WHAT IS AN URGENT CARE

Scioto Urgent Care is a convenient alternative when your regular family physician is closed or you can't get a timely appointment with your own physician. The urgent care is open everyday, including evenings and weekends. You do not need to be a regular Scioto Urgent care patient to enjoy our convenience and medical care. No appointment is necessary. Just walk in and receive care when you need it most.

Scioto Urgent Care is for non-emergency problems such as sore throats, ear infections, minor burns, or cuts and bruises. More serious injuries or illnesses, such as heart attack and stroke are best treated at an emergency department. Contact your primary care physician for chronic problems like depression or diabetes.

ADVANTAGES OF AN URGENT CARE vs. AN EMERGENCY ROOM

Often a patient can enjoy the services offered in a hospital emergency room with shorter wait times, and often at much less expense (an emergency room can be as much as 3-4 times as costly). However, there are situations that it is more advisable to go the the ER rather than the Urgent Care. The following charts help determine which center is best for your medical needs:

URGENT CARE:

  • Injury or Illness you would visit your primary care physician
  • Non severe abdominal pain
  • Laceration or cut repair (stitches)
  • Treatment of minor burns or skin irritations
  • Cerumen (ear wax) impaction removal
  • Drug testing
  • School / work physicals
  • Wart / skin tag removal
  • Ingrown toenail treatment
  • Travel immunizations
  • Flu shots
  • Sports injuries such as sprains or strains
  • Mild to Moderate Asthma attacks
  • Upper respiratory illness

EMERGENCY ROOM:

  • Chest pain with shortness of breath
  • Severe burns
  • Electrical shock
  • Complications from pregnancy
  • Altered mental states
  • Seizure
  • Poison ingestion
  • Digit or extremity amputation
  • Syncope or unconsciousness
  • Major head injuries

Urgent care facilities are also an important resource for individuals who may not have an established primary care physician. An example would be a new resident who has overtaxed him/herself during a move thus come down with a cold or flu or who sprains an ankle while moving furniture into a new home. An urgent care will see that patient while some physicians may be unable to accept new patients.

Another benefit to an urgent care is their extended hours. Most are open later in the evening and on weekends. And for those people who realize they a medication refill on the weekend, the urgent care physician can also order refills in most cases.
