Flu Season is Here

Flu Season is Almost Here

Columbus, Ohio – The dreaded flu season. Every year it sweeps through offices, schools and other places where people gather and makes life miserable for some. It can be particularly troublesome for some groups, such as the very young and senior citizen. While most flus manifest as a miserable bout for a few days, left unprotected it can truly harm the most vulnerable. Even if you do not fall into a high risk group, it is good to be prepared and save yourself trouble this season by getting a flu shot.

Influenza, or”the flu”, is a common infectious disease that causes such common symptoms as chills, fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headaches, coughing, weakness/fatigue and general discomfort. The vaccine, or shot, can protect against the three or four strains that are predicted to be common for each season. “The symptoms vary, but it’s certainly not a pleasant experience and can be avoided.”, says Dr. Marc Pesa of Scioto Urgent Care. While a flu is a good idea, it also a good idea to take other precautions. “Practice good hand washing, avoid physical contact with those who have the flu, and other similar common sense steps.”, continues Dr. Pesa.

When it comes down to it, there are certain groups that should always get a vaccine before the season but everyone is highly recommended to get a shot if they are older than 6 months old. The people in the high risk category are those at risk of developing complications from existing conditions, those younger than 5 and those older than 65, according to the CDC. Also, it’s important to remember that those people working in close proximity to the high risk group should be vaccinated.

You may be asking how effective the vaccine is. That usually depends on the age of a person, their health status, and the level of match between the vaccines administered and the strains that are circulating. “Regardless of risk level, a shot is almost always a good idea during the flu season. It’s a quick and easy thing to do that heavily outweighs the downside of catching the virus.”, notes Dr. Marc Pesa of Scioto Urgent Care.

Scioto Urgent Care is offering $25 flu shots to get people prepared for the season. “If you ask someone who is under the weather from the flu if they would pay that to have a high chance of their symptoms disappearing, I think you can guess what they would say.”, Dr. Pesa noted. It’s a quick and easy step to take to keep yourself healthy, and Scioto Urgent Care will get you ready.
